You may think it to be weird that I would have things I hate about photography, given how long I’ve been into it and how much I invest effort, and time, into it too … but just like anything in life, there are moments I am madly in love with it, and then there are moments that I just hate anything to do with it!

Here’s my take at the top 10 things from each of the light & dark side …

Love

  1. That it allows me to isolate myself and “hide” behind the viewfinder into my own little universe

  2. Create an immortal moment in time that is otherwise lost forever

  3. Create that piece of art that adds colour and life to my journey

  4. The marvel for the technology that allows for this to happen, and how the world is now getting over-flooded with billions of photos every day … the future “us” will sure know what we ate, drank, and defecated too!

  5. Takes me to new parts of the world, to see what my take of that over-done scene would be like

  6. The sound, or lack of at time, of the shutter the cameras make; their mechanical resonance is a marvel

  7. The countless diversity in options for how a certain concept / scene can be immortalised

  8. For the LandScape & Nature work, I love how it makes me realise we are so little in this vast universe, and hence reminds me to be humble to all around

  9. There is no end to the learning of what to create, even if it’s the same location / subject / concept; there are countless takes to each and every image

  10. Keeps me in touch with the splinter in my mind’s eye, insomuch that I look at everything as if through the frame of my camera’s viewfinder

Hate

  1. The more photography skills I acquire , the more I realise how little I know … could this be a “Love” too?

  2. It’s allowed me to express the contradiction in societies, even if that came at a very high cost … again, could this be a “Love” too?

  3. It highlighted to me how much I love my solitude and my “me time”, as the best images are taken when I am out alone with my gear … and another that could also be construed as a “Love”!

  4. How small we are! With the years / decades behind the camera, I’ve come to realise how much I want to explore and see in the expanded universe, but also know that it is not possible, as both technologically and time do not permit ... and yet another possible “Love”?

  5. I hate how the availability of constructive criticism is so little and limited, the world is becoming too sterile and sanitised with political correctness

  6. GAS! Yes, GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome); and while this in itself isn’t bad, but it has two detrimental effects; a drain on the bank account, and the lack of intimacy with one’s existing gear

  7. Social misjudgement to those carrying relatively large gear, and the assumption that they’re commercially driven; and the hostility it attracts!

  8. How judgmental societies can be to those in creating art

  9. The more creative I get, the more I realise I lack creativity … an oxymoron

  10. and my biggest hate, this one I’d rather not mention and I will keep to myself, please
