Get intimate with your gear
When you buy your new camera, or whatever gear for that matter, make sure to use it extensively, and learn its various capabilities in anger and to the point that you know its inside and out, until you’re able to change its settings without the need to look at it! Basically, get to know it intimately so that you can adjust and change settings without taking your eyes off the subject.
The last thing you’d want, is to be in of an assignment, or a photoshoot, or whatever, and have to pause to see how to change things. That few moments of pause can kill the mood, the creative cycle, the mindset. That’s not to say don’t pause and take breaks during your work session; but an unscheduled pause to check how to do things is different that a scheduled break pause!
